We need your help to support Ysser, a 9-year-old Syrian refugee girl suffering from a serious and urgent medical condition after she survived the devastating February 2023 earthquakes.

At BeChild (formerly Kids Rainbow), we host everyday educational activities for refugee children in a community center in Gaziantep, Turkey. During our laboratories, while teaching, we also learn a lot from children attending our center. From Ysser, we learned resilience and joy are possible in every condition and is what gives us hope.

Hope and Healing for Yesr: Help a 9-Year-Old Refugee and Earthquake Survivor Walk Without Pain / Access Urgent Leg Surgery

The Story of Yesr

In February 2023, the south-east of Turkey was hit by a powerful series of earthquakes that claimed 50,000 lives. At that moment Ysser was in Antakya, she remained under the rubble of her destroyed home for 48 hours before a rescue team could finally find her and transport her to Adana hospital for medical care and an urgent surgery at her right leg. She spent over a month in the hospital before slowly starting recovering.

Ysser suffered serious injuries that still affect her daily life today, including damaged tendons causing pain and deformity to her leg. To fully recover, she urgently needs a series of three complex surgeries. One of these involves a delicate orthopaedic procedure called a tendon graft with autologous tissue, where a piece of skin is taken from another part of her body to help repair and extend the damaged tendon.

Without these surgeries, Ysser risks living with chronic pain and limited mobility. She may not be able to walk long distances, play with other children, or live a fully active and independent life. Timely intervention is essential to give her the chance to grow up without constant physical limitations.

Long-Lasting Consequences

Ysser joined our community center in the summer of 2023. Despite physical challenges and frequent pain in her leg, her passion for learning and play remains strong, giving motivation to her peers who know her story.

At the time she was under the rubble Ysser was alone. Until she was transported to the hospital she was separated by her family, this is an extremely traumatic situation to be separated from the caregivers for minors under emergency circumstances, in the long term it can create serious emotional distress for children. When her mother could reach her, she could barely recognize her, she told to BeChild Protection team.

Ysser lost XX months of school, lost her house, after already living the trauma of displacement and the anxiety of the precarious status of refugee. She had to relocate to Gaziantep with her family as they lost everything, twice, in Syria because of the war, and in Turkey because of the quakes.

At BeChild we see Ysser growing, learning, playing, sharing resources with friends, having great ideas and expressing her opinions while being kind with others.

What does Yesr need and how much does it cost?

How does BeChild help those who need medical support?

BeChild’s primary focus is Child Protection. That’s why, alongside education, we support children’s overall well-being, including their physical and emotional health, and we work closely with their families.

In medical cases like Ysser’s, BeChild Protection team accompanies the family to hospital visits, provides translation from Arabic to Turkish to help Syrian refugee families communicate effectively with doctors, and helps them consult multiple hospitals to explore treatment options. We also collect and organize medical records to ensure families are fully informed.

When public hospitals are unable to offer the necessary treatment, as in Ysser’s case, we step in to organize fundraising campaigns to cover the costs. Beyond practical help, we offer emotional support too: we want families to know they are not alone in facing these challenges, and that a community is standing with them.
